Selecting the Right Digital Dental Solution
Like every hot new development that transforms an industry, dentists and dental labs are being faced with an ever increasing number of choices when it comes to their digital makeover. For the dentist it starts at the chair with choice of intraoral scanner and the list of offerings is long and seemingly growing daily. Here is a sampling of the current choices:
-
CEREC® – by Sirona Dental System GMBH (DE)
-
iTero – by CADENT LTD (IL)
-
E4D – by D4D TECHNOLOGIES, LLC (US)
-
Lava™C.O.S. – by 3M ESPE (US)
-

-
3D Progress – by MHT S.p.A. (IT) and MHT Optic Research AG (CH)
-
directScan – by HINT - ELS GMBH (DE)
-
trios – by 3SHAPE A/S (DK)
Considering that the acquisition of the scan is critical to the all of the processes that follow and the eventual analogue result, this is an extremely important decision! So far it seems Itero is leading the way in terms of popularity but anticipation is high for 3Shape’s Trios entry. As with all the products we recommend at Proto3000 we believe it is very important to pick an open source solution. An open source solution will allow dentists and the labs they work with the greatest flexibility going forward as they consider which elements of the digital workflow chain to outsource and which to bring in house. A 3D Printer may not be the right solution now but as volume of digital scans increases it will likely become a desirable option and only open source will easily and affordably allow the adoption of this technology.
CAD/CAM
-
Now that we have our scan file it is time to start working on the restoration or orthodontic appliance and we run into a similarly long and ever expanding list of dental CAD/CAM software solutions to consider
-

-
Ceramill – by Amann Girbach
-
3Shape’s Dental System – by 3SHAPE
-

Again, at Proto3000 we emphasize the importance of an open source solution to allow the dentist or lab the maximum flexibility and affordability as they negotiate their evolving digital workflow solutions requirements. In evaluating the landscape of CAD/CAM options it is vital to understand each situation and its unique requirements. There is an optimal software configuration for orthodontics and crown and bridge depending on the emphasis within these disciplines and the most common use of other technologies like 3D printing and milling. To help dentists and labs make the best choices for their operations we work with a wide range of software and hardware partners to make certain our customers’ needs are met and their options are open for the future. We are excited by how the industry is evolving and as interested as our customers in powering our core 3D printing and milling products with the best scanning a software options.
