Iron Man and Legacy Effects are at it again. For a second time.
For the second consecutive movie, Robert Downey Jr. will use the latest 3D engineering technology to help combat his enemies. On screen Iron Man will be decked out in his latest gear, which can be seen in the trailer below. Behind the scenes, however, Downey Jr. will be 3D laser scanned and will have his Iron Man suit printed in 3D, for optimal customization.
Beyond a perfectly fitting suit on-screen, there were practical reasons for the move from a stock suit to the custom fitted one. In the first Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. Complained of discomfort and uneasiness with the maneuverability of his suit. That, however, was before Legacy Effects (the world renowned special effects company) purchased an Objet Eden 3D printer.
In the first Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. Complained of discomfort and uneasiness with the maneuverability of his suit. That, however, was before Legacy Effects (the world renowned special effects company) purchased an Objet Eden 3D printer.
Legacy Effects used 3D Prototyping software, including 3D laser scanners and 3D Printers from Objet on Downey Jr. According to Objet, “for the sequel, the production company scanned Robert’s hands and used the 3D printer to specially create flexible gloves. He was thrilled with the change and happy to work in them for hours.”
Using the 3D laser scanner, Legacy Effects scanned Downey Jr’s hands, creating both STL and CAD files. From here, 3D Post Production Software was used to not only create the most comfortable and custom gloves, but programmers were able to create unique designs that define Iron Man’s image. The entire Iron Man body suit and helmet were also created based around the STL and CAD files created from Downey Jr’s body scan. The whole process, which took less than 24-hours, was not only more comfortable, but was cost effective effort and time efficient as well.
To complete the process, Objet’s Eden 3D printer was used to quickly print durable, comfortable, precise models for the movie. Layer by layer, Downey Jr’s custom suit was built by Objet.
In the near future, you can look forward to other superhero’s body suits to be customized using the very same process, with help from Objet.
Iron Man will continue to use his lasers to defeat enemies and improve his equipment, thanks to Objet.
