A service letter from Boeing has been released which includes guidance on how to use the Creaform HandySCAN 3D™ for measuring blends and dents on airplanes. Together, the SmartDENT 3D™ solution and the Creaform HandySCAN 3D scanner were utilized in the development of advising Boeing’s quality specifications for the service letter.

Creaform is proud to see leaders such as Boeing, turn to 3D scanning solutions for surface defect inspection. With SmartDENT 3D, our goal is to provide the most accurate damage assessment to our customers, so they can make informed and safe decisions while getting their aircraft back flying with minimal downtime,” said Jérôme Beaumont, Global NDT Business Manager at Creaform.

Benefits of SmartDENT 3D Review

  • Metrology-grade measurement for aircraft preservation: The 3D scanner has a resolution of up to 0.100mm (0.0039 in.) and accuracy up to 0/025 mm (0.0009 in.) with a traceable certificate and high repeatability.
  • Speed: The scanner is the quickest and most reliable aircraft surface analysis device accessible on the market. It is 80 times faster than the traditional pit gauge technique.
  • Live visualization and portability:  The portable and handheld scanner is extremely light, weighing in at less than a kilo, and perfect for use both outdoors and in hangars. The user can conveniently execute a 3D surface inspection of any part of the aircraft (on which manual techniques would be used) – this includes under and on the wings
  • Intuitive pass/fail assessments: With its real-time software visualization, and intuitive design, Creaform’s non-destructive testing solutions provide shortened learning curves and nominal operator training in order to ensure accurate results.

Not only does the Creaform HandySCAN 3D scanner comply with Boeing’s service letter, but it is also listed in the Airbus Technical Equipment Manual and it’s referenced in its Structure Repair Manual.
