Create custom fixture components with 3D printing. Modular Fixtures are an excellent one-time-use manufacturing solution that saves time and money as fixture interfaces and custom components can be printed quickly and easily with FDM technology. Constructed from a kit of interchangeable components, the modular fixture is easily reconfigured for any work-holding application. When not in use, the fixture can be dismantled for convenient storage. For these applications, the modular system is efficient and cost-effective.

Modular Fixtures are commonly used to:

  • Stage parts for CMM inspections
  • Hold work pieces during machining
  • Position parts when bonding or assembling

While the majority of the modular fixture is constructed from standard components, the Fortus 3D Production System helps create a custom interface with FDM printing technology. At each support point, an FDM contact element acts as the transition from the part’s surface to the fixture’s grid plate, pillar or beam.

Using a CAD program

  • Design Fixture
    • Import STL file to be fixtured and create files for modular components of the fixture
    • Position the part, grid plate, pillars and beams in the desired alignment
    • Select the fixture support points and specify the type of contact to use and direction to the grid plate to create custom contact elements
  • Manufacture Fixture Components
    • Import STLs of the contact elements and prepare them for building. All Fortus materials and build styles may be used. However, ABs-M30, PC, PC-ABS with soluble supports and a solid fill are recommended
    • Remove support structures and prepare for assembly once build is complete
  • Construct Fixture
    • Gather FDM components, grid plate, pillars and beams
    • After assembly instructions, place FDM components on the beams and pillars, and connect beams to the grid plate.
    • Modular fixture is now ready for inspection or a manufacturing application
