Tough 1500

Tough 1500 Resin. Resilient, skin-safe material

Tough 1500 resin is certified safe for skin contact, making it perfect for wearables, personal protective equipment, and other consumer goods.

For pliable yet stiff parts or prototypes

Formlabs’ Tough 1500 resin is the most resilient material in our functional Tough and Durable Resins family. This resin produces stiff, pliable parts that bend and spring back quickly under cyclic loading. It offers similar strength and stiffness to polypropylene (PP).

Why Use Tough 1500

A balance between elongation and modulus*

Tough 1500 Resin provides a distinctive blend of rigidity and flexibility, enabling components crafted from this material to flex and promptly regain their original shape. It exhibits high resilience and fast spring back.

*Elongation measures how far a material can stretch or bend. | Modulus measures stiffness, or how easily the material can stretch or bend.

Biocompatible 3D Printing Resin

Tough 1500 is certified for long-term skin contact. To ensure parts are safe for skin contact, it’s essential to adhere strictly to the recommended post-processing conditions for Tough 1500 Resin.

FORM WASH SETTINGS

DURATION

10 minutes + 10 minutes in IPA

NOTES

Conduct a two-cycle washing process to properly clean parts printed with Tough 1500 Resin, preferably employing fresh solvent for the second wash. Parts necessitating two wash times should undergo two complete wash cycles. For the second cycle, ensure the use of a clean solvent. The initial wash cycle removes the majority of the resin, while the subsequent cycle ensures thorough cleaning of the parts. If parts printed with Tough 1500 Resin are intended for skin contact, they must undergo a 20-minute wash in ≥99% IPA using a Form Wash/Form Wash L. Depending on ambient conditions and part design (e.g., thicker walls or areas prone to IPA pooling), longer drying times before post-curing may be necessary.

FORM CURE SETTINGS

DURATION

60 minutes

TEMPERATURE

70 ºC

NOTES

Post-curing is essential for components manufactured using an engineering-grade resin (e.g., Rigid, Tough & Durable, and Flexible & Elastic types) to achieve their peak mechanical properties, ensuring they perform as intended.

If parts printed with Tough 1500 Resin are intended for skin contact, they must undergo post-curing in a Form Cure at 70°C for 60 minutes.

ISO Standards
Tough 1500 Resin has been evaluated as a skin contacting device in accordance with ISO 10993-1, and passed the requirements for the following biocompatibility endpoints**:
  • ISO 10993-5 Not Cytotoxic
  • ISO 10993-10 Not an Irritant
  • ISO 10993-10 Not a Sensitizer

*Data was obtained from parts printed using Form 2, 100 μm, Tough 1500 settings and post-cured with a Form Cure for 60 minutes at 70 °C.
** ISO 10993 standard testing samples were printed on a Form 3 with 100um Tough 1500 Resin settings, washed in a Form Wash for 20 minutes in ≥99% Isopropyl Alcohol, dried for at least 30 minutes and post-cured at 70°C for 60 minutes in a Form Cure.
